Of all the youtube videos I've watched, the simplest hairstyle is missing for me. Not only easy to make but also in the care. Easier than a Twist Out, Braid out or even Bantu Out while it produces at least as beautiful curls and takes less time.
The hairstyle I'm talking about is derived from one I remember from Suriname from the time I wore an afro: Motjo Kumbas. You've probably heard of it. It's braids that you tuck in.
Sometimes they are confused with Bantus, but they are not the same at all. Motjo Kumbas are tucked inwards. Bantus are wrapped around the base of the hair, but Motjo Kumbas are tucked inwards; into the base of the hair.
I used to wear Motjo Kumbas when I braided my hair before going to bed so my afro would be nice and big the next day. It was an in-between hairstyle, actually just like rollers but with your own hair.
Since the Kumbas are so easy to make, I often made them when my hair was freshly washed or after I had worn my hair in an Afro. Braiding or twisting took too long. So what I did was just twist my hair around my finger and then tuck it in. Super easy. That's how I walked around with my hair.
When I once let my hair down after combing it out with the hair milk I discovered that it was quite nice. That's how the Kumba Out was born. The best thing about this hairstyle is that the curls stay in place longer and better. My explanation is that with these kumbas you make optimal use of the natural curl of frizzy hair. More than with braids or twists where the natural curl is manipulated into a twist. But all that technical aside.
I hope you will try this old new hairstyle and let me know how it turns out. See my video for instructions. I also asked the contestants of America's Next Natural Model to help me spread the word about this hairstyle. You can see the result here: Kumba Out for ANNM 2013 .
