Coily Hair, What You Need to Know and More

With the very first book and the very first website, Drs. Mireille Liong, through kroeshaar.com in 2002, laid the foundation for what is now BAD Hair Uprooted, The Untold History of Black Follicles.

Bad Hair Uprooted, The Untold History of Kinky Hair, is a platform for exploring the idea of "bad hair."

BAD Hair Uprooted

People of African descent are the only ones in the world who still do not fully have the human right to wear their hair naturally. Dreadlocks, cornrows, and bantu knots have been stereotyped and labeled as unprofessional, unsanitary, or radical for generations.

BAD Hair Uprooted is an exhibition and platform that exposes and explores the consequences of 300 years of unequal hair rights, mentally, physically, and financially.

De allereerst kroeshaar kapsel tentoonstelling van BAD Hair Uprooted in Casa Frela in New York

BAD Hair Uprooted - Exhibition

The very first solo exhibition was in 2008 at Casa Frela, a characteristic New York brownstone, where Beyoncé's video "If I Were a Boy" was also filmed.

What started as an exhibition to showcase the beauty of natural hair has grown into a platform for equal hair rights, supported by thousands of photos of hairstyles from cities all over the world. From Brooklyn to Amsterdam, from Paramaribo to Kigali.

Lurie Daniel Favors's Afro

In 2005, I took this photo at the African Festival in Brooklyn, NY. Not only was it the most frequently chosen photo from my first exhibition, it's also the first photo to go viral on Facebook and the cover of Lurie's book.

Afro State of Mind: Memories of a Nappy Headed Black Girl, is a book that uses a natural hair journey as a metaphor for the Black experience in the West.

Lurie Daniel Favors can be heard on SiriusXM Urban View and hosts her own podcast Lurie Breaks It Down.
