BAD Hair Uprooted

The Shackles of Hair Loss is part of BAD Hair Uprooted.

Black people are the only ones who still don't have the human right to wear their God-given tresses naturally.

Styles like dreadlocks, cornrows and bantu knots have been stereotyped and labeled as unprofessional, unsanitary or radical for generations for centuries.

BAD Hair Uprooted is a platform that explores the impact of 300 years of unequal hair rights — on a mental, physical and financial level.

BAD Hair Uprooted, the Untold History of Black Follicles

BAD Hair Uprooted began in New York by photographing locs, twists, Bantu knots, cornrows, and Afros at a time when natural Black hair was still largely taboo.

The collection has since grown into an internationally traveling exhibition featuring hairstyles from four different countries across four different continents. Alongside the exhibition, the project has expanded to include lectures, dialogues, hair stories, a hair and fashion show, and now a documentary currently in production.

BAD Hair Uprooted at the Suriname Museum

The hairstyles above were all captured in the Netherlands because I am currently working on and looking forward to my exhibition at the Suriname Museum, which is scheduled for 2028.

While the majority of the photo collection currently consists of hairstyles from New York, there is plenty of time to add homegrown styles. If you are interested in being photographed or would like to contribute fun ideas, connect with us on WhatsApp.

Kroeshaar, Wat je Moet Weten en Meer

With the very first book and the very first website dedicated to Black hair, Drs. Mireille Liong laid the foundation in 2002 with kroeshaar.com for what has become BAD Hair Uprooted — The Untold History of Black Follicles.

BAD Hair Uprooted — The Untold History of Black Follicles is a platform dedicated to exploring and unpacking the idea of “bad hair.

De allereerst kroeshaar kapsel tentoonstelling van BAD Hair Uprooted in Casa Frela in New York

BAD Hair Uprooted - Tentoonstelling

If I were a boy" is opgenomen.
