Almost 5 years after I started locs, my hair is longer than ever. Not only that, it grows like crazy. People who know me, but don't see me every day, are often shocked and have no trouble telling me. My God, your hair is long! My God, your hair has grown! What am I doing differently, what's the secret?
In my opinion, not much has changed. The biggest difference is of course that I now have locs. With that, my hair routine has changed, but I am and will remain a low maintenance person when it comes to hair care. That was me when my hair was straightened/defrizzed/relaxed, but also when I just wore frizzy hair. What I mean by this is that your personality does not change when you change your hairstyle.
I didn't like putting in rollers, sitting under the dryer and definitely didn't like tongs. Brrrr, my ears are still traumatized by those awful hot tongs. I simply don't have the patience to stand in front of the mirror for hours to create a nice hairstyle. Maybe also because I'm not that handy and very lazy.
When my hair was just frizzy, I would go to the salon every now and then to have a nice hairdo made and I would wear that for a few weeks. I can recommend that to everyone. A good hairdresser can transform uncombed, unwashed hair into a real crown! Without the magic hands and especially the knowledge of talented braiders, my hair would never have survived. I know where to find them in Suriname, in the Netherlands and now here in Brooklyn.
I also wore quite a few hats when I was frizzy. Especially in the winter. I never liked combing my hair, not even when I had my hair straightened and now with locs that is the biggest and best change. My hair doesn't need to be combed anymore! I can't tell you how wonderful that is.
Low maintenance is the best thing you can do I heard a loctitian say on facebook, but it seems to me for all hair types. The less you manipulate the hair, the easier it can grow undisturbed. It's that simple.
I believe the low maintenance routine is one of the reasons my hair is so long. Good care, however minimal, is very important. You can't throw all kinds of stuff in your hair and expect it to grow faster. I still use the Going Natural Hair Care products, of which the Scalp Conditioning Spray and the Tineke's Healthy Hair Growth spray are really the staples.
