On November 1, the exhibition Bad hair at its best! was launched in the prestigious Casa Frela gallery in Manhattan.
The exhibition consists of a unique selection of colorful portraits of frizzy hair hairstyles. The radiant hairstyles almost literally illuminate a world in which frizzy hair is normal. A real revelation for a society where frizzy hair is still difficult to accept and is even referred to as “bad hair”. A look at one of the striking photos is enough to understand the message: look how good “bad hair” can look.
Photographer Mireille Liong, owner of kroeshaar.com, didn’t know what hit her when she stumbled upon an African-American bazaar in Brooklyn, New York. For the first time in her adult life, she found herself in an environment where kinky hair was so normal that the hairstyles dominated. A true revelation for a Black woman who had spent most of her life imitating hairstyles for other hair types, resulting in thinning and hair loss. The examples and even proof of what was possible with African hair, the hair type Liong was born with, was an unforgettable experience.
Inspired by the feeling that came over her when she saw the beautiful hairstyles, she could not help but capture what she had experienced as a photographer. Since then she has not stopped taking pictures and the result is a rare beautiful collection of more than 500 hairstyles.
The aim of the exhibition is to bring an unprecedented kinky hair world to the outside world to break through the stereotypical ideas. With this exhibition I hope to achieve that kinky hair will be more widely accepted. I am convinced that more women will wear their hair kinky and that will contribute to healthier hair for Black women, says Liong.
