Looking for the Best Hair Rollers for Braidlocs, Locs and Naturally Frizzy Hair

M. Liong

Everyone loves voluminous curls. They draw attention no matter your hair type, but finding the perfect rollers can be a challenge. That’s because most rollers on the market aren’t made for natural hair, let alone locs.

Criteria for good hair rollers for naturally frizzy hair

What do rollers need to be good for natural hair and locs? There are a few criteria that everyone agrees on, whether you have natural hair, locs, or even straight hair. Good rollers should be:

  • Easy to use
  • Comfortable to sleep with
  • Light; our head doesn't have to lift weights
  • Flexible; our hair grows in all directions, so we need flexibility
  • And let our hair dry as quickly as possible, because our locks take longer to dry naturally.

My experience with hair rollers

In case you didn't know, Velcro rollers rip out your hair, so don't even bother with them. I remember from back when I had relaxed hair. My mom bought them once and they were a total no-go.

The plastic rollers with teeth aren’t much better. They don’t pull out as much hair as Velcro rollers, but they still pull out your hair. Rollers with teeth may work for straight hair, but any type of roller with teeth is just not good for our hair type.

Smooth Plastic Rollers

Even the smooth plastic rollers I used when I had straight hair are unfortunately not really suitable when it comes to frizzy type 4C hair. Not only because it is difficult to get your curls or locs under those snap-on rollers and to get your hair dry, but because the plastic is so hard and hurts when you try to get a good night's sleep. The sleep you deserve after all the effort to get those rollers in your hair, but also because your hair has to be dry when you take the rollers out. To get perfect curls your hair has to be completely and properly dry and as you know, our African frizzy locks need more time to dry.

Looking for the best hair rollers for frizzy hair?

Since going curly I have been trying out a few new rollers to give my hair nice full bouncy curls. Some of these rollers are still on the market so I hope my experience and thorough unscientific research can save you some headaches and hair pains.

Curling My Natural Hair with Flexi Rods

Flexi rods were ok or at least a solution, which you can read about on My Natural Hair Curls with Flexi Rods . Other bloggers and vloggers had much better results than I did. Many had better curls that lasted longer. I'm not super handy, so it could be because I didn't do it right, but looking back I think it was quite an effort. They also weren't really comfortable to sleep in, but in my opinion better than other hair rollers. Drying took a bit too long for me.

Spiral rods on natural curly hair

Those spiral curl rollers? Don’t even bother with them. They’re so hard and inflexible that you don’t even have to put them in your hair to feel pain. I threw them out before I even tried them. Vlogger Janae Mason confirms this in her video by saying that her neck hurts! For the same reason, I didn’t even consider perm rods as an option. Soso headache.

Although the results of the Curl formers looked really good, I honestly didn't even bother to try them out, knowing myself. The effort it takes to put in one of these curl formers seems like a bit too much work to me and with my two left hands when it comes to hair, I just didn't feel like it. So I have no judgment on this. Of course you are free to try them.

Donuts Hair Rollers Eating Kayley's Hair

I’m not sure I’d try this one, but it was fun watching Vlogger Kayley Melissa demonstrate all the weird rollers she ordered. With honest feedback, she showed how those Donut Rollers ate her hair, which only confirmed that I didn’t even have to try it.

I skipped the rubber cups because I thought they would never work on frizzy hair, but a few vloggers have proven me wrong. They are easy to roll into your frizzy hair and are very comfortable and easy to use. The problem with these types of rollers is that they take ages to dry your hair. Vlogger Kayley Melissa complains about it in her video and she has straight hair, let alone frizzy hair.

Magic Hair Rollers in Naturally Frizzy Hair

Also vloggers with natural hair let us know that silicone hair rollers do not dry our hair easily, even though they are called Magic Hair Rollers. Vlogger Janae Mason , who in my opinion got quite good results, was not happy with it, according to her it took a very long time to dry her hair. In another video vlogger eVaniwithaV is also very clear about it. After 3 days of air drying and two hours under the hair dryer her hair was finally dry. She liked the result, but I can understand very well that she never needs it again.
