As one of the administrators of the Facebook group Kroeshaar en zo I literally post questions in the group from time to time. 'What is the worst thing you have experienced with your hair?'
I would like to start with my own experience.
It has been a few years since I was at the mulo school in Paramaribo. It was vacation and I wanted to color my hair. After I asked my mother if that was allowed I got permission.
She asked me what color I wanted to dye my hair, I said blonde. Together we went to buy bleaching powder at a Chinese store.
My mom dyed my hair for me then (just the bottom, not all of my hair) and I was super happy. After a while I noticed that my hair became very dry and started to break. Also the bottom of my hair didn't curl anymore.
I got scared that I had damaged my hair and told my mother. She came up with the solution to cut off all the blonde bits so that my hair could grow healthy again. No sooner said than done. Then suddenly I had short hair. Luckily it was only for a while.
My hair has grown very well after that and is fortunately healthy again. What I have learned from this experience is not to just buy bleaching powder from the Chinese, and to be more careful with products that your hair uses.
There were also quite a few reactions in the Facebook Group. This one really stood out for me:
A lady had just given birth and had decided to have her hair straightened because she had her hands full. With the new baby, she hardly had time for her hair anymore.
Since the hormone balance can still be quite disrupted after giving birth, her hair also started to fall out. As if that wasn't enough, she got pregnant again after 4 months. This wasn't planned, but it did make her hair fall out completely. As she said 'she HAD hair'.
My conclusion is that life can definitely be overwhelming. Especially when you just have your first child. Still, it is important to make time for yourself as a new mother. Have your hair braided or cut short, but chemicals that can damage your hair and scalp, you really should avoid.
There were many more reactions against it from people who had damaged their hair by coloring. My conclusion is that we really need better hair color products that do not damage our hair.
