While tempers seem to be running high everywhere, in the Netherlands around the celebration of July 1, in Suriname around the constitution, I think it is best to focus on what it is all about: commemorating the abolition of slavery.

Before we go any further, I would like to congratulate Diana Neijman on the best submission of hairstyles for Drogisterij Dio. This beautiful Kwie Kwie Ba hairstyle was unanimously chosen. Thank you Diana Neijman. For those who don't know, she comes to your home to braid for you, read more about the talented hairdresser.
July 1st Remembrance
In a post on facebook my friend Jennifer Baarn has expressed very well what we could reflect on today. These are her words:
In my own way I celebrate Keti Koti in New York. Not July 1st but July 4th is a holiday here, the day on which the independence of the United States is celebrated. This year, however, I will not only be dressed in our own traditional Surinamese clothing to celebrate Keti Koti. For the second time, I will be allowed to organize a hair show at the International African Arts Festival.
For the 45th anniversary of this great festival I am doing a hair show with Going Natural Hair Care that honors our ancestors: Back to the future of our Roots. You can read more about it on Going-Natural.com .
