AMSTERDAM, June 2026 — On Friday, June 26, 2026, equal hair rights advocate, author, and photographer Dr. Mireille Liong will give a lecture titled The Chains of Hair Loss at Community Center Alla Kondre in Amsterdam. The lecture is free to attend.
The timing is deliberate. A week before Keti Koti, Liong will delve deeper into the connection between the legacy of slavery, colonial beauty standards, and the disproportionate hair loss among women of African descent. Connections that are often ignored in daily life turn out to be not only confronting but can also contribute to awareness, recognition, and healing.
Liong is the founder of BAD Hair Uprooted, an internationally touring exhibition and public educational movement that links hair loss to historically unequal hair rights. In 2020, she testified before the New York City Commission on Human Rights in support of the CROWN Act. In 2024, she was recognized as an NYC Citizen of Recognition.
