I wanted something different than twists or an afro. Since dreads are so popular I wanted to try coils or pipe curls. They look like curls, often people who want to curl their hair also start with coils. I was curious how it would look. So-called temporary dreads, so to speak.
However, I wondered if it was possible to make ringlets with my hair type. I once tried to do it and even bought the “Quick braid”, because it would be easy to make a ringlet curl like that, but to no avail. My hair got stuck in the tool too often, which was a real fiddling around and after a few minutes of Quick Braid the curl came loose again. A hopeless task for impatient me.
The first salon I went to said my hair was too long for that. I could imagine that because just like the quick braid tool the comb would get stuck in my curls. Tameka
a natural hair specialist thought differently about this. She said that I could wear coils and assured me that they would even stay in my hair for weeks, until the next wash. Of course I was very curious.

Tameka first analyses my hair and scalp thoroughly. Then my hair is divided and smeared with some Curly Twistout Hair Cream . A nourishing water-based cream/conditioner that stays in the hair.
My freshly washed hair was still half wet. That's normal for making coils. Never try to dry them because there's a big chance you'll damage your strands. My hair was divided really small for the coils. I don't think I braided or twisted my hair that small myself.
The layout is according to the brick principle so that the coils fall between the partings and the hairstyle forms a whole. How to make coils is explained in detail in “Frothy hair; what you need to know and more”. My coils were twisted clockwise. Before twisting, BBD Glass Curling Creme was added to each part.

We chose this product because it keeps the coils in well while the hair remains soft to the touch. With gel and many other products the hair feels hard/crunchy once it is dry. Not with BBD. Above the result. I am more than satisfied. For the first time my hair is in pipe curls!
My hair shrinks at least 70%.
From the front, Tameka cornrowed some of the coils so that the hair wouldn't constantly fall into my face.

It’s been 3 weeks now and my coils aren’t even “frizzy.” I redid a few of the back and sides, not with a comb but with my hands because I was afraid my hair would curl. I’ve been keeping my scalp clean by scrubbing it every 3-4 days with Sea Breeze and a lick of Scalp Conditioning Spray to prevent dry scalp and flakes. I then use a microfiber cloth to clean between the partings, a real treat for the scalp that feels oh so nice and fresh. You almost get addicted to it.
Loosening it does take time. Don't just comb through it. Just turn the hair the other way and the best thing is to use the Silky Shea. I had to do it again from the back because dust always gets stuck between the hair there somehow. The hair is most sensitive in the front hairline. That's why it's also useful to do the edge again after 2 weeks.
