Unfortunately, I didn’t get to see the opening of Meko New York Hair and Spa Boutique in Orange, New Jersey on October 17th because I was in the Netherlands. It was quite a trip from Brooklyn, but it would be worth it, said Simeko Watkins-Hartley, owner of the salon, which specializes in more than just hair. Simeko is all about healthy hair care. She made this decision consciously after her experience with a stylist who claimed to specialize in healthy hair care.
Despite the fact that Simeko, who was a well-trained and experienced hairdresser herself, allowed this woman to put a weave on her newly relaxed scalp on top of the burns and bruises . This experience is why she says it is important to learn our backgrounds and learn to stand up for ourselves.
Shocked by her experience but impressed by her passion, understanding and knowledge, I decided to put my head in the hands of Meko New York Hair and Spa Boutique when they invited me to sign books. The way to deal with these kinds of horrible experiences is to tell others so they don’t make the same mistake, and even better is to teach the world how to deal with it.
Simeko showed off her signature Cornrowed Updo and I don't know if you've ever seen this hairstyle, but I have, so I was definitely looking forward to my day at Meko's.
The one thing I always do myself is wash my hair. This is not only to reduce the time I spend in a salon, but also because I consider myself a master at washing my hair in “no time” with the products I swear by: the Herbal Shampoo and the Detox Conditioner . These products improve the condition of my hair strands during my worst times, but that is another story.

I immediately felt at home at Meko's. It was a beautiful, cozy, inviting environment in which you immediately feel relaxed and at peace. After a warm welcome and a chat, I was ready for my new haircut. When Simiko personally gave me a head massage, I let her continue endlessly.
In the meantime, she asked me one question after another. I really appreciated that. We talked a lot about her and I had the feeling that in this environment you could share even your worst hair problems. There was no need to be ashamed. Everyone understood you, and what's more, they would find a way to help.
Long story short, not only was I more than happy with the service, but as you can see, I was also very happy with my new haircut.
The small cornrows, oh so elegantly braided give me a look I've never had before. To get a uniform hairstyle, hair was added in the middle where the cornrows meet. The extensions are twisted into a high bun in the shape of a mohawk.
On the train home I immediately attracted attention. A drummer playing a hairdo in the middle of the aisle, clearly drawing attention, stared at my hair and said it was beautiful. Now that bodes well for the holidays, doesn't it?
