The very first time I had my natural hair professionally styled was at my first hair expo in Brooklyn, New York. The stylist? Netu, an expert in natural hairstyling.
When they asked for models, they didn't have to ask twice. Although I was pretty good at Afros and twist-outs, my own skills were quite limited otherwise. Straight parts? A challenge. Neat, even braids? A total disaster. So when I heard they were looking for models, I was there in a flash!

Flat Twists kinky hair Hairstyle in Afro Hair
Honestly? I had no idea what to expect. But I was incredibly curious about a new look, so I went with it – and I'm so glad I did!
My first professional natural hairstyle, by Netu
Specializing in flat twists, Netu transformed my 4-inch Afro into a beautiful flat twist updo – in less than two hours! I was amazed. My hair had never looked like that before.
The magic of natural hairstylists
From that moment on, I was fascinated by natural hairstylists. I realized: while most of us were busy styling or straightening our hair, they were perfecting their craft against the current. They laid the foundation for today's natural hair culture.
Since then, I've made it a habit: at least once a year, I get a completely new hairstyle. The beauty of natural hair? You can completely transform without chemicals, cuts, or color. With a few inches of kinky hair, a good stylist can change your entire look – think Bantu knots, braids, or flat twists.
Of course, Netu became my regular stylist. She worked on my hair many times after that.

Flat twists – a few tips
A flat twist updo can easily last three to four weeks – provided you take good care of it. Sleeping with a satin or silk bonnet keeps the style neat. We have two in the shop: the Satin Bonnet and the 100% Mulberry Silk Bonnet.
The only thing I didn't have then but would want now? A Scalp Therapy Roller! It not only prevents itching, but also stimulates hair growth and keeps your scalp fresh and healthy.
And you?
