De Boom: Allemaal echt haar. Lange locs opgestoken als een boom met groen bespoten baadjes.

After years, there was finally a Black Hair show organized in Brooklyn. I didn't really know what to expect, but I'm super happy I went, because as a frizzy hair lover I wouldn't have wanted to miss this in my life.

Expectations were already high for weeks in advance. The participating stylists were all big names. Kafele, known for his loc styling, Janice Brown, known for her cornrow styling, Sol, a cheerful newcomer who is a jack of all trades, Derrick Scurrie, known for his regular delights in Hollywood stars, and Locs and Chops, the oldest afro-hair salon in Manhattan that is still at the forefront of styling. A ticket for this grand event was not unreasonably priced, $30.

De Pauw: All real hair with feathers pinned up.

Unfortunately the show started way too late. Very annoying but fortunately that was the only, albeit big, downside.

Once the show started, the audience stopped complaining. Orin Sanders from Locks and Chops really put on an awesome show. The theme was “Connecting the dots.” The most impressive hairdo was a tree made of dreadlocks. All real hair on the model’s head with green spray painted leaves. There was also a Buddha, another model that represented water, really incredible to see.

I have been in the business for years now and thought I was ignorant of all the possibilities with frizzy hair, but after this show it became clear to me that for seriously artistic creations you have to go to the real hairdressers. Frizzy hair is infinitely fascinating. See for yourself.

Derrick Scurrie's models performed a magical play. Lead actress was , Janet Hubert known as Vivian Banks from the series Fresh Prince of Belair

The men's hairstyles were also intriguing. The women went wild for the Kafele models who showed their seductive look with bare upper bodies in pyjama pants.

Back length locs pinned up around the head. Styled by Kafele. Yes, even a white American with long locs was in the show. Integration or not?

Salon Sol showed, among other things, what you can do with locs, long or short.

Janice Brown, always spectacular!

The show closed with Asha Mandela, the woman with the longest dreads in the world. Her long hair was worn by five of the sexy dreadlocked men.

The show was magnificent all at once! The hair salons spared no expense or effort to look good for their own audience. If the whole thing hadn't started too late, it would have been a complete success.
