Bad Hair Uprooted, an exhibition in the context of Remembrance of Slavery Past

Press Release – AMSTERDAM, 1 APRIL 2013

Bad Hair Uprooted, an exhibition in the context of Remembrance of Slavery Past

Sponsored by comedian and television presenter Jorgen Raymann, the largest collection of curly hair portraits will come to the Netherlands this summer, as part of the Commemoration of Slavery Past.

The exhibition aims to address the dogma of “bad hair”. This leftover ideology from the slavery era has an effect even in today’s society.

150 years after the abolition of slavery, afro-textured hairstyles are still not an accepted phenomenon and women from the Diaspora disproportionately suffer from disturbing hair problems.

“Bad Hair Uprooted” is specially composed to make this deep-rooted subject discussable by highlighting the beauty of frizzy hair. The exhibition consists of portraits that show a true spectrum of spectacularly beautiful frizzy hair hairstyles.

The colorful portraits, which were first shown at the prestigious Casa Frela Gallery in Manhattan, New York, were taken by Social Entrepreneur Mireille Liong-A-Kong. Since publishing the very first book on afro hair, the pioneer has been giving advice for more than 10 years: how to care for afro hair , how to create hairstyles and, above all, how to be proud of afro hair.

Owner of the leading websites going-natural.com and kroeshaar.com, Liong began photographing kinky hair styles in the summer of 2004, when she was overwhelmed by the beautiful hairstyles casually walking around the annual BAM Festival in Brooklyn, New York.

With the frizzy hair photo collection, which now contains more than 1000 portraits, she hopes not only to convey the beauty of frizzy hair but especially to convey the feeling that the hairstyles evoked in her to the audience that views them.

Anyone who wants a preview can take a look at kroeshaar.com where a new collection of photos will be uploaded every week. By leaving a comment or casting a vote, interested parties can also determine which photos they want to see during the exhibition.

Here are the first photos from Bad Hair Uprooted where you can cast your vote.
