PJ, a new column

Mireille Liong

PJ is short for product junkie. This is of course about hair products. Until recently I was one of the biggest pj's.

I tried everything, could easily spend hours in a shop looking for the product that would solve all my hair problems. What was the newest? Which brand was better, why, what was the difference? I wanted to know everything. I read the ingredients carefully, but my high school chemistry was insufficient to really understand anything about it. Admittedly, I was not a star in chemistry and that could be the explanation.

But have you ever noticed how many hair growth products are available? Is there a hair cream, grease or conditioner that does not promote hair growth? I would not be surprised if waves will soon also state that they promote hair growth. It is actually surprising that we do not walk around with hair down to our hips, because there is no shortage of customers. Hmm, I am talking about real hair.

I recently walked into a hair store like that and that is very dangerous for a former pj. It is true what they say, once a junkie, always a junkie. For me it is like coming home, like a child in a Bart Smidt. Now I can select better. In the meantime I know almost all possible ingredients that can be in hair products and I also know which ones my hair likes. But even I was dizzy from the enormous range.

I was only there to buy her for just very simple braids with extensions. Oh, what a choice, to go crazy about: Kinky Curly, Curly Girl, Kinky Straight and nowadays even Hip Hop Curl and Baby Bush. What they don't come up with! These hair types are also available in synthetic, Kanekalon and the latest Toyokalon. And I haven't even mentioned the choice in waves. Too much to mention.

It seems obvious to me why there are so many questions and why people no longer know what to buy; there is simply too much choice. Not to channel my excessive interest in hair and the developments concerning products, but mainly to be of service to you, I will be reviewing hair products from next month. I would also like to call on other pj's to share their experiences. I know that there are more than enough of us around. Let us know your latest and favorite discoveries and especially the ones you should not to protect the visitors of kroeshaar.com from disasters. For the normals among us: If you want to know what I or others think of a certain product, send an email.
