Someone's haircut is often the first thing you see, and everyone has an opinion about someone else's hair. Beautiful, not beautiful, well-groomed, unkempt, you name it. And despite the fact that we often deny it, the opinion of "the man on the street" is still important to us. We have found a man willing to give his opinion about hair, and in particular about hair in Suriname.
What I think about frizzy hair…
Suriname is a very unique country. In Suriname you have different types of people with different hair types. People with straight hair, with frizzy hair, with curly hair and others with something in between.
It is the most normal thing to have curly hair in this mixed society. I find curly hair beautiful, when it looks good and cared for. In others, I think it does not look neat, but that will depend on how that person handles it.
Having curly hair seems like a challenge to me. It is a hair type that demands a lot from you, if you want to look good and attractive. For example, you hardly have to comb straight hair to look good, but with uncombed curly hair you can hardly go out on the street.
Typical for a mixed Surinamese like me, I don't have frizzy hair, nor straight hair, but something in between. If I have to describe my hair, I would have a hard time. My mother has frizzy hair and my father has straight hair.
For me as a male, my hair is not really important. It has to look well-groomed, but it doesn't have to be perfect. As soon as it gets too long, it's time to go to the hairdresser.
If I had curly hair, I wouldn't mind at all. I would make sure it looked neat. Guys with curly hair can do something nice with it. You can braid it or even put something like s-curl or something like that in front of it.
Enough said about the gentlemen, I continue with the (Surinamese) woman with frizzy hair.
For a woman, it seems to me that it is more challenging than for a man to deal with frizzy hair. If a man is tired of his hair, he can decide to shave it off. A woman will rarely choose to do this, but she doesn't have to!
There are plenty of options for women to create beautiful hairstyles with curly hair.
For example, a woman can choose to have an afro, straighten, weave or apply false braids. With professional advice and assistance, it should certainly be possible to make something beautiful of your hair. The last thing she should do, I think, is make a 'dessert'.
I wouldn't mind having a girlfriend with curly hair at all. I wouldn't choose for her to wear false hair though. Keeping your hair natural is ideal for me!
If I had a girlfriend with frizzy hair and she would straighten it, I wouldn't mind either. As long as it was done well and neatly. The best thing seems to me to braid the hair in an exclusive model or to make a nice and neat afro. Pure nature.
I think that in general, in Suriname, people pay too little attention to hair care. This is disadvantageous for people with frizzy hair, because their hairstyle looks extra unkempt compared to other hair types.
You often see people with curly hair putting in false braids and leaving them for a long time. You also see them leaving their weave for a long time, until it becomes messy. They also straighten sloppily or carelessly.
I think this is all due to a rather unprofessional 'hair care world' in Suriname, which is a shame. I think that hair, especially for a woman, should be an ornament!
