My Hair Frizzy Story; Why I Decided to Stop Relaxing

mireille liong vlechten extensions When I was 15 I started relaxing, before that I had an afro. For years I didn't know any better, than that relaxing was the best way to make nice varied hairstyles. Until I came to the Netherlands to study. My hair broke on all sides, no matter what I did. Weekly cream, timely touch-ups, ends, many, many hair products I tried, nothing helped. Eventually I decided to have my hair braided.

It was a long session, about 5 hours. But what a wonderful 3 months that was. My own hair was broken in some places and therefore very short in those places. Because of that, a braid fell out every now and then and that took some getting used to (sjene). But for the rest it was get-up-and-go, wash-and-go and my hair always looked good. I didn't have to take humid weather into account, didn't have to put in curlers, didn't have to use a curling iron, the extensions kept my hair in shape.

Taking out the braids was a disaster. Up until then I had combed my hair daily, so months of uncombed hair with dirty tangles was not something I was used to. What was this, how could this happen? It took at least 8 hours to get the braids out and impatient as I am, I went COMPLETELY crazy. So this was the downside of braiding.

Because of the get-up-and-go convenience, I kept braiding my hair, another 2 times for 3 months. After that, I suddenly had beautiful healthy frizzy hair, that was wonderful. My hair was shoulder length, nice and healthy, so now I could relax it again with a clear conscience, right? You guessed it, my carefully cultivated shoulder length hair broke off completely after relaxing it 2 times. Believe it or not, this happened 3 times and then I thought: "I'm crazy too!" Why do I relax? Why do people relax at all?

With my hands literally in my hair, I started to wonder a lot: what can you do with frizzy hair (besides braiding or relaxing it)? what is frizzy hair actually? how do you care for it? Since there was no literature available in the Netherlands, I ordered books via Amazon.com. I also requested research on frizzy hair.

In the meantime I went looking for the ideal hairstyle, minimal time investment, maximum result. I tried a lot: afro, bantu knots, twists, you name it. My experiences and theoretical knowledge are processed in the book "Kroeshaar". I hope you buy it, hope you learn something from it and wish you a lot of reading pleasure.
