Frizzy Hair Hairstyle by Shantika Douglas

So says Shantika Douglas – Horb, confident successful Manager, who has never relaxed her natural curly hair. Unique when you consider that the vast majority of Black women start relaxing in their teens. That’s why Shantika is the Natural of the month.

Most people grow up thinking that frizzy hair is bad hair. You’ve always been frizzy. What idea about frizzy hair did you grow up with?
My mother has her own hair salon at home and is also a teacher at a hairdressing school. So I have often seen customers with different hairstyles and hair types (frizzy, curly, permanent, etc.). In my opinion it was about your hair being your jewel and you should therefore take good care of it. You do not have to do anything chemically with your hair or add a false hairpiece to be beautiful. Your (frizzy) hair is your jewel and you should take good care of it. That was the idea regarding my hair. My mother made natural leave-in's & hair grease for my hair herself.

I have a very free spirit and fortunately I also had the space (in terms of upbringing) to cherish what I love.

Were you not allowed to straighten or did you not want to straighten? Why were you not allowed to straighten or why did you not want to straighten?

Straightening has never been an issue. I have said this since I was very young: I will never relax my hair!
This did not cause any problems during my upbringing because, as I indicated earlier, I was given the space to express my opinions.

What do you think when you look at the developments in the field of frizzy hair now?

Then I think he he …… people have become aware that they are made perfectly. They dare to stay in the original state now!
The Bible says: And God saw that it was good… He was pleased with his creation. We are good just the way we are!

What has caring for frizzy hair and especially preserving your own hair taught you?

I learned that you don't have to be rich to look good. Everything you need is in nature. You just have to eat healthy and drink enough water, and also seek information on how to become better and better at taking care of your hair. You can find everything in nature!

Have you ever been bullied because of your curly hair?

Well as a child ….. If you sometimes had those big braids. But that was negligible because they did that as cousins among themselves. While we all had frizzy hair. So not really seriously bullied. It was just a nice “snapshot”

But not at school because others looked down on you because you didn't straighten?

No, not at all.

What's your favorite hairstyle?
My favorite hairstyle now is dreadocks in all sorts of ways. from updo's to just down or in a ponytail. I love it all!

Can you finish the following sentence: I like curly hair because

I was born with frizzy hair and therefore it also has to do with who I am. I have frizzy hair because I am a Creole. And I love myself! Otherwise I would never be able to love others.
