At the age of 18, he was already a former professional footballer. When Godwin Falix heard that he was going to be a father, his football dream fell apart, but he did not give up. He founded his own management 'Godwin Sports', where he provides guidance to young talents, top amateurs and professional footballers in their careers. The guidance that he himself never received at the crucial point in his career.
Like many young boys, Godwin also wanted to become a professional footballer from a young age. “Football is my passion, my life,” says the former professional footballer. He started his football career at Excelsior Rotterdam, where he played at the highest level in the youth
played football for two years in the Feyenoord youth selection and then went to RKC Waalwijk. That's when things went wrong. "One cause was mismanagement. The management made promises that were not kept and there was no personal guidance to excel as a top athlete. The second point that went wrong was the message that I was going to be a father. I was busy with things that should not be on the agenda at that point in your career. I was only nineteen when my daughter was born and I had no relationship with the mother. This was mentally very tough, because I suddenly saw my future very differently." Still, he does not regret that his football career did not go as he had dreamed as a little boy. "I believe that God has other, bigger plans for my life, which you cannot fulfil as a footballer. I was made to help people
Godwin's life is based on the statement: “Inspiration is everything!”
Godwin Sports
After Godwin had to stop playing professional football, he fell into a hole. But with the birth of his daughter, Godwin changed his mind. “I had to work on my social career to be able to support my daughter.” That’s when Godwin came up with the idea of his management. “I believe that with my experience as a player, I can be an added value for top athletes, as a sounding board and as an advisor,” says Godwin. He wants to give the young athletes the guidance that he missed in his career. “It is important that the footballers, before a big match, do not have to do anything else.
things on their minds, like a girlfriend who demands their attention. The players need to get rid of their egg in order to perform well and they do not always get that personal guidance from the club. We at Godwin Sports offer a listening ear and help, both before and after the match, so that the athlete can focus one hundred percent on the important match.”
Godwin's goal with his management is to inspire people to get the most out of themselves. He has already done this with Rydell Poepon of football club De Graafschap and Sinourgni Bandjar of RKC Waalwijk. In the future, Godwin would like to gain international recognition, in order to also be able to reach the rest of the world.
to share experiences and guide players in achieving a great career.
A proud black man
Godwin is short and sweet about his hair. Like most men, he doesn't have much to say about it, except that he is very proud of his curly hair: "I'm a proud black man," says Godwin. What you might not expect from such a tough ex-footballer is that he
has been a hairdresser for two years. “Of course I do both my daughters' hair. They think it's fantastic!”. He always keeps his curls nice and short, so that he can, as he so nicely puts it, 'quick, quick' get out the door in the morning. He has never considered trading his short haircut for long dreads like footballer Edgar Davids. That's all far too much hassle. He finds short hair much easier. A very efficient Natural Boy.
Godwin doesn't quite understand that women with frizzy hair often want to hide their natural hair by making it as smooth as possible. "I think this is an inferiority complex of the black woman who no longer knows where her roots lie. They no longer understand that frizzy hair is unique," says Godwin. He himself tells his daughter that she should be proud of who she is and also of her roots and frizzy hair. "We are built this way and we should be proud of that, period!"
Interests
Someone who loves football so much must have a favourite player. “My favourite football player has always been Patrick Kluivert and now my favourite football player is Lionel Messi.” These names may sound familiar and are not very surprising. What is surprising is his favourite food and film. Godwin, who comes from Grenada, has a typical Dutch favourite dish: spinach with fried potatoes and pulled pork. His favourite film is the romantic comedy 'The Best Man', you wouldn't expect that from such a tough football fan?!
Inspiration from above
In the beginning you could already read that Godwin had confidence that God has big plans for his life. For the Christian Godwin Falix, Jesus is a great source of inspiration. “He is the beginning and the end,” he writes under his interests on Facebook. The man who wants to inspire others through his experiences, gets his own inspiration from higher up. But the greatest source of inspiration here on earth is still his mother, who has always been there for him and still is.
Finally, Godwin has a message for us: “Look where you come from and accept that, so you know where you are going!”
