This is definitely one of the most exciting months of my life. I don't even know where to start, there is so much happening. Not only that, it's all happening so fast.
I am totally stressed, tense and boundlessly excited about my exhibition next month. It opens on November 1st at the prestigious gallery, Casa Frela, in Manhattan. About 30 of my photographs will be on display there for a month with special programs on Sundays. These are photographs that I have taken during the last few years at African-American summer festivals. The hairstyles that are on display are really incredibly inspiring and when you see them you really think, “If this is bad hair, I want to have bad hair.” The aim of the exhibition is to reveal the new meaning of bad hair. As they say in America: These styles are BAD!
The closing of the exhibition on the 30th will be very spectacular with a hair show with the participation of the most historically famous salons. Khamit Kinks, Locs 'n Chops, Tameeka, an African salon and more will make sure the show will end with a bang. Click on this link for more info: The Pursuit of Nappiness reveals BAD hair at its best
As if all this isn't enough excitement, I also got to interview Malcolm Jamal Warner this month. Remember him, Theo from the Cosby show? He had locs for a long time, but now he's cut them off. You can read all about it at http://going-natural.com. He also has a great new CD out. Malcolm-Jamal is down-to-earth and a really nice guy. And did you notice that he's a cutie too? With or without locs.
No, that's not all. There's a lot more going on and I don't know if I can fit it all into a blog. There are the American elections of course. Marjan Inbar, who has her own media company here in New York, will be broadcasting for Nova on election day, November 4, and she asked me if I wanted to take part in the discussion. "Are you kidding?" Being a political addict, I couldn't say no. I already get a stomach ache when I think about that day. I know from experience that you spend almost the entire day staring at the TV and literally counting votes with CNN and MSNBC as they come in. It will be a real treat to be able to talk about the elections on Nova myself. I'm looking forward to that too.
All in all a really super exciting time. Now I am mainly busy selecting photos. I have about 1000. You can already see a few from the selection here on the site and of course on http://going-natural.com. After that I have to work like a rocket on my own photos because there will finally be a frizzy hair calendar of mine with 12 different hairstyles. Stay tuned.
