Going-Natural in the Port of Harlem

Surinamese Mireille Liong-A-Kong, known from the websites kroeshaar.com and going-natural.com , is on the cover of the latest edition of Port of Harlem magazine.

The international magazine that has been around for 15 years is published twice a year in both America and Gambia. In this latest edition, the art of frizzy hair hairstyles is central. In that capacity, Liong-A-Kong was approached by director Wayne Young who became familiar with her work through the exhibition “ Kroeshaar op z'n best ”, Liong's first exhibition in Manhattan, NY. Young was very impressed by the collection of captured hairstyles and wanted to share the colorful art with his readers.

'I never thought they would choose my picture for the cover', says liong. They asked me to send pictures and yes they specifically asked for this picture of me but I didn't think anything of it. I had also sent pictures of the models of America's Next Natural Model. 'It was definitely a nice surprise', she answers laughing when asked if she was disappointed.

According to Liong, however, it is more important to spread the message that afro hair is beautiful and versatile. The magazine also features two of the models from going-natural.com . Teesha Borum, winner of America's Next Natural Model and Toshia Lacy, a writer with very long dreadlocks.

The edition can be ordered via the Port of Harlem website .
