Spring doesn't seem to be coming through completely this year. A few nice days, then rain again, but that shouldn't spoil the fun. In the space of a week I shot more than 100 great photos of oh so beautiful frizzy hairstyles.
Less than a week ago I had the opportunity to capture the bridal hairstyles of Khamit Kinks, participate in a forum of kinky hair pioneers and visit the wonderful bazaar of the Dance Africa Festival of BAM (Brooklyn Academy of Music)
visits.
Bridal season
To kick off this bridal season, the three entrepreneurs Anu, Casandra and Sherrie joined forces. Khamit Kinks salon took care of the hairstyles, Casandra the wedding dresses and Sheri the accessories. As a photographer I was allowed to capture the result and I don't think I have ever been enthusiastic about a photo shoot. On kroeshaar.com you can see some, but there are many more in "The Gallery" of http://going-natural.com .
Heads Up Hairitage
Heads Up Hairitage, a Black Hair Celebration was organized two weeks ago by Anu and Moi, inspired by the story of Melba Tolliver. Melba was the first African-American female news anchor for ABC. In the 70s she was one of the first to do “Breaking News” until she decided to wear an afro.
Despite repeated requests from her boss to wear her hair as it was before, relaxed, she stood her ground. It's not a political statement, she said, I like my hair the way it is and I don't see why I should change it. After much pulling, she was suspended, but when the New York Times newspaper got wind of it, she had to go back on the air immediately to avoid a racial scandal.
Now almost 40 years later it was time for a retrospective. This resulted in a reunion of pioneers from the afro hair industry, intellectuals and artists. It was a real party. I felt it was a great honor to be invited to the panel that included Michaella Angela Davis, former Oprah stills who also appears on CNN as a commentator. But also professor Farah Jasmine Griffin who knows almost everything about our afro hair history as well as Ademola who opened the first afro hair salon in America, made me feel like I was in great company.
It was a magical evening. Together with the packed room we talked, listened, empathized, laughed and drank. The ultimate way to do justice to frizzy hair in any form.

BAM Festival
This festival is held every year by the Brooklyn Academy of Music on Memorial Day Weekend. Besides spectacular dance shows, there is also a three-day bazaar where everything is for sale. From paintings to earrings. Here you can really see the most beautiful hairstyles walking around. This bazaar inspired me to create the exhibition Bad Hair at its Best that was such a success in Manhattan last year.
That I am not the only one who is impressed by the beautiful hairstyles was confirmed by Franklin Esajas of SME Omroep. He was there this year and enthusiastically filmed. Keep an eye on SME TV for a live report. The photos will be on going-natural.com from next week.
About kroeshaar.com
You may not see much of it now, but the site is in development. We are working on making it all more user-friendly so that everyone can participate more easily. Whether it is discussing, uploading photos or asking questions. Keep watching. Of course I am open to suggestions.
