I found their hairstyles strikingly beautiful and I was thrilled that I could photograph them. It is clear that they love their hair. They also answer questions about their hairstyles and hair care openly.

At first I thought they were Sisterlocks, but Reina and Helga wear very small, thin braids. They braid their own hair. Every month they take it down and do it again. In reality it looks even more beautiful than in the picture. They even had an even more beautiful hairstyle at Sabi Wiri Dei. Unfortunately they had already left and I couldn't photograph them. Too bad, too bad, too bad. I would have liked to give it to you.

Ninon, former Yellow Birds basketball buddy: I washed my hair, then let it dry in braids. “It’s all real and completely mine, you know”. I relaxed once, but I really couldn’t stand all that fuss.” It was so much work. I couldn’t put in rollers myself and had to bother people all the time. Then I had to sit under the dryer for hours with those huge curlers. So I gave up on it very quickly. I slowly cut out the relaxer bit by bit.

Nina Jurna and her crew from Fawakka Productions. She makes TV productions for RTL among others. We went out together to start the discussion about frizzy hair. Marlon from Kapsalon Rozenblad clearly showed his disapproval of frizzy hair with comments like “Frizzy hair doesn’t suit everyone”. Especially the comment “some types of frizzy hair are really untreatable” really bothered me. Look forward to this item that will appear on TV in the Netherlands among others. Keep an eye on the site and let us know your opinion. Thanks Nina, I think it’s really cool of you to dare to do this item.

Photo 1. Tjinliepsie stood out with her crazy fro. I cut my hair really short and just let it grow again. I make my own hair grease. For that I mix Vaseline with Surinamese herbs, she said during the lecture.
Photo 2. Peter Waterberg of the SRS interviewed me for his daily program. I would like to have dreads, but it is not yet accepted here at my employer.
Photo 3. Unfortunately I didn't get a chance to ask this gentleman about his secret to such a beautiful fro.

1. I ran into this mother of a kroeshaar.com visitor in the city. Her beautiful twists give her a young look. She already has a daughter who is graduating. 2. Afra from the daily newspaper De Ware Tijd was sent to report on the Sabi Wiri Dei. Afterwards I ran into her for DWT with a cheerful twistout. A look that suits a fashion and lifestyle columnist.

1. The so-called acquaintances, Els and Hardy, who were present at the publication of my first book, I met on December 31st at the party of the Cabinet. Els's twists are getting longer and Hardy is also letting his hair grow a bit, it seems.
2. Of course, the First Lady was also present with a beautiful Anjisa (Surinamese headscarf).

I was not able to photograph the croquette behind this Eetcafe, Laurence. But for those who want something different from Javanese or Chinese for an evening, I recommend the Optimst. An atmospheric eetcafe with a delicious original Surinamese European kitchen. I still dream of that Gamba Sauce.
Walk through Paramaribo and you will notice how many beautiful curly haired women are walking around. A true inspiration for a collage.
