She hates combing hair?

Mireille Liong

little-girl-big-natural-hair-exhibit3-mark Dear Mireille,

My daughter is 3.5 years old and has a mix of hair. I am Dutch and her father is Angolan. I have a problem. My daughter has a lot of knots, hates washing and combing her hair. How often should I wash and comb her hair? Which products and combs can I best use for her? I would love to hear a response.

Greetings,
Marleen du Pon

Thank you for visiting kroeshaar.com and your question. It would be nice if you could email a picture, because like you there are many Dutch mothers who do not know what to do with frizzy hair. This is more than understandable, frizzy hair is different from all other hair types. A child who hates combing hair does not make it any easier.

First of all, it is important to know that frizzy hair, precisely because it is so different, also requires different care. The combs, shampoos and other hair products that work well for your hair, can be a disaster for frizzy hair because frizzy hair is very fragile. See the overview below from the book Naturally Frizzy.

curly hair Smooth hair
Curls, waves, spirals Right
Absorbs light Reflects light
Grows at an angle Grows downwards
Stands right on Lies, falls down
Shrinks a lot Hardly shrinks
Ideal for braiding Do not hold braids

Perhaps even more important to understand is that many children with curly hair hate hair combing because the hair is treated incorrectly. In addition to the wrong products, the wrong means and methods are also maintained, but what is most damaging is the expectation that curly hair must react the same and the hairstyles must look the same as that of straight hair.

So, to start with, it's a good idea to put aside everything you know about her and pretend you know nothing about her at all so that you can be open to all the wonderful things that afro hair has to offer.

Black people are not blessed with frizzy hair for nothing. Hair care, from combing to styling, is precious time for frizzy hair, quality time to bond mother and daughter. Just ask all the frizzy girls and women. They can all remember how their mothers combed their hair!

When it comes to the actual care of frizzy hair, washing and detangling are of primary importance. Not just detangling, no, it is actually an art to detangle without it hurting. For this you need a large comb with wide-set teeth. In addition, I recommend the No More Knots detangler. Take your time, spray some No More Knots in the hair so that the hair does not feel dry and start at the bottom of the hair. If you are not used to it, it takes time, but practice makes perfect. Once you get the hang of it, it will be easier and faster. For an explanation of how to best comb out frizzy hair, see the video and order the book Natuurlijk Kroes. Also see the video below

To wash the hair I recommend the Going Natural Herbal Shampoo and the Deep Conditioner . You will notice the difference immediately. To keep the hair supple and soft it is useful to use the hair milk or hair butter.
