Last year I was approached by Jennifer Baarn , an example woman with not only international experience but also an unprecedentedly broad world view, to bundle our expertise as Surinamese career women overseas and share it with interested parties from the business community in Suriname. Together with two other power women, Suzette Dumfries and Erna Aviankoi, we got started.
This is how the UMA Empowerment & Awareness Initiative was created. The network organization was officially launched on March 2, 2015 with the Frizzy Hair Exhibition Bad Hair Uprooted. However, the UMA Empowerment & Awareness Initiative encompasses much more than frizzy hair. The goal of the organization is to contribute to a positive self-image of women as an irrefutable basis for development.
To achieve this goal, UMA! organizes a conference every year around Women's Day. The theme for 2015 was 'Identity and self-development; ingredients for social success'. The conference that was opened by First Lady Mrs. Bouterse and took place in the Lala Rookh building was a great success. All forms of media from newspapers to television stations paid attention to the first UMA Empowerment & Awareness Initiative. This is what De Ware Tijd Organization UMA! Week looks back with satisfaction wrote.
At the moment we are working on a website and the theme for next year. Interested parties can register for now via the facebook page. To get an even clearer picture of what UMA! stands for, the interview with M'Manten Taki. Of course I would like to hear your opinion.
