It was really fun. There were 20 of us. 20 women with frizzy hair and no hairstyle was the same. All variations on Afros, Twists, Dreadlocks and so on. Frizzy hair remains impressively versatile. Exchanging tips and experiences went smoothly. Inspiring to try out new hairstyles again.

A product swap is always fun. Instead of throwing away your bad purchases from the past, you give them away or swap them with someone. There is always someone who wants to try a product that you don't like, maybe that person likes it. Hair products can be compared to food; what you don't like, someone else likes.

Eating with women is always something. Nowadays everyone watches what they eat and there is always one on a diet. Except World of Curls. "You know," she said, "I've had enough of the yo-yo effect and the desperate stuff. I have to die sometime, I'll die fat and happy." Of course, after this remark, there was a burst of laughter and then they also discussed different diets.

There were many digital cameras and many pictures were taken. What did I have to do with David, our designated (white) waiter. He offered to take a picture of the whole group to one of us. He shouldn't have done that. He was handed 10 cameras and off we went. When it turned out that there was a birthday boy somewhere in the restaurant, we all spontaneously started singing "happy birthday" with the other waiters. That was something. The birthday boy even stood up to thank us with a humble bow. That's how good, spontaneous and fun our choir sounded.

No, we're not all shouting cheese. It was just so incredibly cozy, that always makes an impression, even in a world city like New York. Cars stopped to wave at us spontaneously, David was almost run over. I've probably never seen so many "nappy heads" together, it was noticed and then people shouted "KEEP GOING!". Of course we didn't catch up. All in all it was a pretty inspiring get-together, we ate well, learned something new and above all laughed. I'm looking forward to the next happy-to-be-nappy-day with great anticipation.
