Of course it is a great honor to have been chosen for the book by photographer Raul Neijhorst entitled: Suriname Bekend(t). To belong to one of the 75 special Surinamese people that he highlights as a photographer in an edition that will be released on November 25, the day that Suriname becomes independent for 40 years, is quite something. Literally every famous Surinamese person I know is on the list. A wonderful idea.

As surprised and happy as I was, I still had the necessary skepticism. Looking at all those big names of famous Surinamese people in the book I couldn't help but think what makes me so special? Of course I didn't want to sound ungrateful but the question was burning on my lips and of course I wanted to ask Raul himself.

Anyway, it was really nice to receive Raul. He is really super busy with his project which is really nice to see. Barely arrived the preparations for the photo shoot with Serge Tsai and in Manhattan started. Serge, also an old acquaintance for me, is Sound Engineer in one of the largest studios on the island. Name an artist and he has done a recording with him or her. From Shakira to Rihanna.

He had already booked the studio in Mid-Town Manhattan before arriving so when it was time we went together to the train to the photo studio near Macy's. Before we went into the studio Serge was briefed, but after that everyone was ready.

While Serge was being photographed with his secret, I was being portrayed as a Surinamese lost in the foreign land. If you are curious about the revelation of the famous sound engineer, you really need to order the book. You can do that here: Suriname Bekend(t). When we were done shooting, it was time to have a bite to eat.

While the three of us were having a delicious Thai meal, Serge was also interviewed. Raul seemed like a jack of all trades, but after that he was finally completely exhausted, jet lag and all. All in all, he had been up and working for more than 24 hours straight.

The next morning we were both up early, fortunately. My interview could therefore take place well before departure. Afterwards there was even room to ask Raul: I don't want to sound ungrateful, but why me? Why did you choose me among all those other famous Surinamese people? The answer in the video.
