The Difference Between Sisterlocks, Braidlocs, and Micro Locs

Mireille Liong

It is almost impossible to tell the difference between Braidlocs and Sisterlocks at a glance. Even if you look really closely you will not be able to tell the difference because once the strands have grown together the locs look almost the same.
My Braidlocs are also mistaken for Sisterlocks. To help you understand the difference between these two types of locs, should you ever have to make a choice, I would like to explain the difference between Braidlocs and Sisterlocks.

There are five main differences between Braidlocs and Sisterlocks: installation, pattern, starting technique, maintenance technique, and price.

1. The installation
Sisterlocks is a trademark and they can only be installed by a certified Sisterlocks consultant or consultant in training. So if you really want Sisterlocks, check to see if loctitian is certified. You can check this on the Sisterlocks Website. There are several people who claim to do this but are not certified.

Braidlocs are simply started with braids. This means that they can be installed by anyone who is good at braiding. You can either braid your hair yourself or go to a salon to have your hair braided.

2. The layout
The layout determines the look of the future locks, so it is very important. Sisterlocks have a meticulous layout that takes into account the texture and density of your hair to create uniform locs.

When starting out with Braidlocs you can also start with a pattern that is perfect for you, it just won't be as accurate in many cases as that of a trained Sisterlocks consultant.

3. The starting technique
Unlike most braiding techniques, a sisterlocks consultant starts at the end of your hair and works his way up with a Sisterlocks tool to create a Sisterlock in your hair. It is a specific technique that knits hair strands together from the beginning into one lock.
Braidlocs start with braiding the hair. No tools are needed, nor is a special technique. Braids also hold the hair strands together very well.

4. The Maintenance Technique
A rotation is the way locs are maintained. It essentially attaches the new hair growth to the rest of the lock. A Sisterlocks rotation depends on both the texture of the hair, as well as the density.

Although Braidlocs can be maintained with a Sisterlocks rotation, they are most commonly maintained by interlocking, which is also a type of rotation.

5. The price
Because they often take more than a day to install, Sisterlocks are expensive. You are mainly paying for the expertise and time of the consultant. So the longer the hair, the thinner your locs, the more hours it takes and the more you pay.

Since Braidlocs are not a trademark, you can maintain the locs yourself, interlock them or go to a Sisterlocks consultant.
