Hi, my name is M van Laar and I am 15 years old. I was born in Nigeria and have hair type: very curly! I usually wear braids, but I would like to try something different, because I think my hair is long enough now to try something new.

I really wanted to straighten my hair, but after reading all the stories on this site, I definitely changed my mind! That's why I'd like to try the Twist Out, because I've seen how you can wear your hair in different ways with it. I don't know if that's possible with my hair type.
My hair is very frizzy and when it's wet, it shrinks completely and is no longer combable. I have problems with combing; after washing my hair, or sleeping, or if the air is humid, it immediately gets terribly tangled, and so far I haven't found the right products to get those tangles out and to be able to comb my hair relatively smoothly. Do you have anything for that?
And I'm a girl who prefers not to spend too much time in front of the mirror in the morning to do her hair RIGHT for school :) So if I twist my hair and sleep on it, will it be tangled the next day, or do I not need to do anything else with it?…
Would I have to twist my hair every day to avoid tangles, or just every week?…Also, I wouldn't know what I need for that twist out, if I can even do it. How do I make my hair combable, less dry, and less frizzy?… I have many questions, but I hope you can help me.
Regards, M

Dear M,
Thank you for visiting kroeshaar.com and, of course, for your question, which I am very happy about. Of course, I am happy with your question because you have decided against relaxing, but also because it sounds like you are blessed with a wonderful thick head of kinky hair that many would be jealous of. Lurie Daniels is a friend of mine with such hair, and her photo was the highlight of my exhibition. Everyone unanimously agreed that her hair is simply beautiful. That photo was taken a few years ago, and Lurie's hair, who owns her own law firm in Manhattan, is now even much longer.
If you also want to grow your hair beautifully long, I suggest you first learn how to detangle it and how to wash it. Never detangle dry hair, otherwise it may break. Just spray a little No More Knots on the hair before detangling, and you will notice that the comb or brush glides through the hair. If your hair is really thick, I would also recommend the Knopen Teezer, because believe me, with this brush you detangle your hair in half the time compared to using any other comb or brush.
To wash your hair, I would recommend starting with the Going Natural Herbal Shampoo. I suspect your hair feels dry due to product buildup. A lot of people use conditioners and hair grease interchangeably to soften their hair, but what they don't know is that these products often leave residues that are difficult to wash out. That's why you need to do a deep cleansing treatment from time to time. You can do this with the Clean Start or with the Going Natural Detox Conditioner.
Use a conditioner after washing your hair and only then comb your hair, while the conditioner is still in it. Do it in sections, not your whole hair at once. Take a section that just fits in your palm. Once it's free of tangles, make it a twist. This will make detangling a lot easier, and when your hair dries, it won't be so full of tangles. Use a large comb with wide teeth.
What is also very important is that you never go to sleep with your hair loose. Make sure your hair is always in braids, twists, or simply rolled up so that it doesn't get tangled when you sleep. They don't have to be very small twists. Just 6 to 12 large twists or braids are more than enough. That doesn't take much time and then you can do anything with your hair.
The twist-out is definitely possible with your hair type. See Lurie's video. Her hair wasn't completely dry, so it could be better, but at least you get an idea.
I am also someone who doesn't like to stand in front of the mirror for too long. That's why I've also found an easy way to do a quick twist-out. In the evening before going to bed, I make about 9 to 12 large twists with the hair milk. I really brush the hair milk thoroughly through my hair. From every three twists, I then make a braid. So if I have 9 twists, it becomes 3 braids; if I have 12 twists, it becomes 4.
The next morning, I can really just take out the braids and twists within 10 minutes, and voila, that's it. I don't have to comb anymore, just style my hair. Here you can read my detailed instructions Cheerful curls in kinky hair and here you can watch Lurie's videos. How to comb out your hair and how to create a twist-out.
Well, hopefully, this has helped you get started. Good luck with the twist-out, and send a photo if you'd like.
Odi,
Mireille
