Hi Mireille, I have a question about my dreads. My dreads were tucked in by the knitting needle method. In the beginning they were still nice and soft and curly, I liked that, but as they got longer they felt hard, yes compact and straight so straight down, no more curls.
So I can make few hairstyles because those dreads do not give, they are quite hard. I then started comparing with other people. And I have met several people who have very long dreads with their natural curls and soft, men too by the way. Is this because of the knitting needle method?
I am now loosening my dreads because I can do little with them. I naturally have beautiful curls and I want to see them in my dreads. Do you have any tips or maybe another method.
Also I learned from the beginning that you should not put anything in front of your dreads except some oil now and then. But my experience is that the hair becomes very dry and looks dull. I then just started putting moisturizers and then the hair looks very fresh and it becomes softer. I don't know what to believe about dreads anymore. Everyone I meet works with a different method.
I recently met a brada who has soft long dreads but they are not tucked in but that woman twists the regrowth around the dread. According to some people this is not a good method. I don't understand it anymore. Do I have to use special sisterlocks for the curls? Which products of yours can I use to remove the dreads because I don't want to shave my head bald?
Thanks in advance Odi Akuba

Hi Akuba,
Thank you for your question and congratulations because this is the first question about dreadlocks that I answer via kroeshaar.com. My own hair probably has something to do with it.
In itself, the method you use to care for your hair should not matter. First of all, it is important to know that braids naturally feel different than twists and coils. The texture is different. With braids, just like with interlocks, the knitting needle method, it does not feel “smooth” but that does not necessarily mean that the hair is hard.
For dreadlocks care, the fewer products the better. However, you can't rule out an internal problem, lack of certain nutrients or stress. If not only your hair but also your skin feels dry, this could indicate another cause.
Personally, I am also not a fan of oil for dreadlocks. Some people swear by it, my personal experience is that oil makes frizzy hair feel stiff. Especially dreadlocks and braids because oil attracts invisible dust particles from the environment that build up over time and cannot be washed out of the hair properly. Moisturizers only make the problem worse. Even people with normal frizzy hair often ask why their hair feels so dry.
This is because the leave-in conditioners used often leave a layer on the hair strands that initially softens the hair, but over time has the opposite effect. The same layer that makes the hair feel soft hardens, just like the limescale you see on washing machines.
The best methods to wash all possible accumulated residues from the hair are the Herbal Shampoo and the Detox Deep Conditioner. The shampoo washes clean, while the detox naturally absorbs all elements that do not belong in the hair, such as residual oil residues. The active charcoal particles do that. The combination of both products also makes the hair feel naturally soft and shiny again.
About twisting locs, whether it is healthy or not, depends entirely on your hair but especially on the size of the locs. With medium to large locs it is absolutely no problem to twist the hair. If you choose somewhat thinner dreadlocks, like mine, then you can rather use the knitting needle method because then there is indeed a big chance that the hair will break, precisely because the locs are so thin. If you suffer from thinning hair, then the interlock method is also preferable to twisting.
The best product to remove your locs is the No more Knots. It is the most sold because it helps remove knots from the hair like no other product. Not only for combing the hair daily, but also for people who have to remove braids from the hair and dreadlocks.
I would recommend washing your hair first with the Going Natural Herbal Shampoo , then deep conditioning with the Detox Conditioner to soften your hair and then using the No More Knots . After washing and deep conditioning your hair you will notice that your hair feels nice and light and soft and dries faster. This is because the residues are out.
Then wait until your hair is completely dry before using the No more Knots. What works perfectly is if you use the spray before going to bed and then sleep with a conditioning cap on. When you get up, you will have to spray a little here and there but then your locks are ready to be easily undone.
By the way, I think that even with “stiff” locs, you can make very beautiful hairstyles. Here is a link to some examples. Dreadlocs without obligation . See also the video about the differences between the various locs:
